In Loving Memory

Karin N. Douglas, a Friends of Boothe Park Board Member for many years, passed away peacefully at home in June. She was 90 years old. A strong advocate for the park for decades, all enjoyed Karin’s vivacious personality. She served the Friends of Boothe as Secretary of the Board and later as archivist.

Born in Berlin, Germany, she moved to Switzerland to begin her career as an apprentice in technical drafting and design with Hasler AG in Bern. When she came to America in 1963, she served as an electrical designer for UOP Air Correction Division in Norwalk. Karin spent 18 years as a regulatory agency compliance coordinator with ITT Flygt Corporation in Trumbull, until her retirement in 2005.

The daughter of an engineer, Karin learned early on the importance of hard work in such a male-dominated field, and enrolled at Sacred Heart University in 1980, earning an Associate of Science degree in Legal Administration, magna cum laude, in 1984.

Karin had many interests and strong determination. She became a licensed pilot, and during the sixties, she volunteered her service to the Civil Air Patrol, an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force in Bridgeport, flying rescue missions.

Karin was a two-time breast cancer survivor. Her personal experience with the illness and post-surgery lymphedema led her to create the Pink Wristband, for use in hospitals to alert medical personnel to the condition. The Lymphedema Alert bracelet, was a national fundraiser. She became an activist and patient advocate by educating others on the effects of Lymphedema. As a director of the National Lymphedema Network, she spoke around the country and formed the first lymphedema support group in CT.

The recipient of numerous awards throughout her career, Karin received the Harold S. Geneen Community Service Award from ITT Industries and the Distinguished Alumni Award from Sacred Heart University. In 1996 she received the D-Day Award from the National Lymphedema Network. In 1997 she was named Woman of Substance in the Connecticut Post. In 2018 she was presented with the Marquis Who’s Who Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.

In a lifetime of service, she became a member of the advisory committee of the Yale School of Public Health and participated in a medical research project at the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute of the Yale School of Medicine.
